[Book Review] I Believe in a Thing Called Love by Maurene Goo

Synopsis (from Goodreads) :

Desi Lee believes anything is possible if you have a plan. That’s how she became student body president. Varsity soccer star. And it’s how she’ll get into Stanford. But—she’s never had a boyfriend. In fact, she’s a disaster in romance, a clumsy, stammering humiliation magnet whose botched attempts at flirting have become legendary with her friends. So when the hottest human specimen to have ever lived walks into her life one day, Desi decides to tackle her flirting failures with the same zest she’s applied to everything else in her life. She finds guidance in the Korean dramas her father has been obsessively watching for years—where the hapless heroine always seems to end up in the arms of her true love by episode ten. It’s a simple formula, and Desi is a quick study. Armed with her “K Drama Steps to True Love,” Desi goes after the moody, elusive artist Luca Drakos—and boat rescues, love triangles, and staged car crashes ensue. But when the fun and games turn to true feels, Desi finds out that real love is about way more than just drama.

My rating : 2.5/5 stars

My review :

I Believe in A Thing Called Love is a book where k-dramas teach you or guide you to win someone’s heart. I am going to be honest here with my opinions, and I am going to point out a few negative reasons why this book did not win my heart.

I will start with the positive aspects of this book. To begin with, I find Maurene Goo’s writing very casual and fun, and that definitely gives me the cool vibes. Her writing makes it easier for me to get through the whole book without any confusions or whatsoever. Other than that, I do appreciate the pureness of Korean culture in this book. I really love how close Desi Lee is to her father. #familygoals for that!

Okay. Here comes the negative aspects of the book that make me worth the book as 2.5 out of 5 stars.

First of all, the main character themselves. I know, no one in this world is perfect, but that is not an excuse for you to be fake or being someone that is actually not you. In my opinion, Desi’s methods of stealing Luca’s heart was not cool and made her a big liar. Some of her methods were not relevant at all and were actually dangerous. Her best friends did not stop her from continuing with her k-drama methods at all, and I completely disagree with that, as they should be the ones who encourage her for something better than the ones that she came up with.

Secondly, I do label the main character as desperate. I am sorry, I know it is harsh, but the only thing that came to my mind when I was reading this book was this girl was desperate. She was too desperate that she would do whatever it would take to make this boy hers, including not being herself. I disagree with people who tend to be someone else in order to be in a relationship with the ideal partners of their lives. Be yourself, and let he or she accepts you for who you really are. That is so much better than wearing a mask to portray another invisible personality that does not portray who you really are. Furthermore, Desi was showing how crazy in love she was with Luca that she sacrificed her main dream that she has been chasing for ages. I can never accept that.

Thirdly, the love that for me, did not really come alive. I think I cringed way too hard. It was predictable, and cliché, and did not shower me with happiness. I do not like how it is so k-drama like. I do watch k-dramas sometimes, but if it is way, too predictable, then I am sorry. I will not be a fan.

I hope I have done my best in writing this review without giving any spoilers. I have read The Way You Make Me Feel by this author, and oh, I loved it! But this book, sigh. It is a huge disappointment, no doubt.

If you are a k-drama fan and you love something that is quite interesting yet quite cliché at the same time, then this book is for you. I am sorry for being rude, but I have to make my opinions clear. Luckily, this book came out before The Way You Make Me Feel. I am looking forward to reading Maurene Goo’s upcoming book to give her beautiful talent in writing some justice, just like what she did with her current, latest book!

Thank you for reading. My final rate for this book is 2.5 out of 5 stars.
